Thanks for the laugh about video conferencing from an adjacent room! I sometimes see FaceBook used for communication between people in the same house - it is not sad, just different.

You are right about schools being a fantastic testing ground - often driven by students' interests. I wrote my first web page with 6th form pupils gathered round in an encouraging way, making jokes about my terrible keyboard skills. Maybe a good approach is for students to lead the way in using conferencing technologies to support their studies, though I don't know if this is feasible for Beijing.

Thanks for the comment! We looked at a video conference relationship between our twinned school in Beijing last year, but the channels we were lead to use did not work and subsequently the relationship unfortunately went quiet (for now). I just wish that schools were more open to new technologies i.e. pro-active towards them as opposed to reactive. I find education a fantastic testing ground for applications of new tech, the meta learning along the way for both students and teachers is not bad either.

I also find that students prefer to look at screens rather than people. I have considered video conferencing from an adjacent room before to simply observe the results in attention from the students.

I like the use of free tools, Toby, and congratulate the academy (and yourself) on taking advantage of the available technology to mitigate the effects of the volcanic eruption on education. I don't suppose this is as newsworthy as schools who are making noises about needing extra supply teachers. I imagine that even free technologies have a cost implication, although probably not as high as the cost, both financially and educationally, of employing supply teachers. And of course you already have both the infrastructure and expertise in place. As an aside, it strikes me that not too much expertise is involved in Skype - my 79 year old mother is happy with Skype video calls.

I was involved in the first school-to-school video conference between Beijing and London pupils in 2000, so it seems a long time since the technology was tried out. Best wishes for your idea of Mandarin teachers - though perhaps it could be English teachers delivering to schools in Beijing.

Coincidence - my mum has just Skyped me from Taiwan!

[...] This year I was lucky enough to attend the Apple Teacher Institute where I engaged with 4 days of activities at Cheltenham college, all centred around using Apple creative products in Education. I met some wonderful people there, all wanting to develop their skills. There was a representative from Hull University there that offered delegates of the event the opportunity of accreditation through reflection, this was something I jumped at! Not quite the structured reflection I was used to as based on the guide, it was more like a learning log. I chose to produce it as a blog post, which can be seen at my departmental blog here.
It's strange to find out just how many sites the internet has about this subject! I don't know if I'll need to come back here, but it is awesome to know I stumbled upon the one that provides a little valuable info if this should come up for me another time
