Chapter 6 By Adam Greenhalgh

Chapter 6 By Adam Greenhalgh

In chapter six we were learning about laptops, desktops, tablets, PDA's and smartphones. We have also been comparing the five decivces we have been learning about and what there pro's and cons are. The laptops, tablets, PDA's and smartphone are all portable devices which are commanly know as laptops but the desktop is plugged in so this is not a portable device. We have also been talking about the prices of the five devices that we have been talking about and we found out that most laptops are cheaper than desktops.

Smartphones are moblie phones and PDA's are just like mobile phones they have all the applications and internet and things that are on mobiles but it does not have the mobile capabillities itself so you would not be able to call or text people on a PDA an example of a PDA is a ipod touch that is made by the comany apple. These two dvices are known as portable handhelcd devices. Also the lastest smartphone are mainly touch screen. To your left you will be able to see one of the latest smartphone that is out it is also touch screen.

Some common features on a laptop are : small and portable, integrated keyboard, touch pad, hot-swappleable , rechargeable battary and the older laptops may have a docking station to add more ports but the later laptops dont,. The size of the motherboard on a laptop is much smaller than the one in a desktop because it has to fit into the laptop because they are smaller. The only small problem with the laptop would be you may have to pay for extra things such as a a mouse if you prefered that over a touch pad because it doesnt come with the laptop. Also because of the laptops small size it does not have a big enought vendolation which means you will have to keep cleaning it you will be able to clean this with compressed air. It will also collect dust externally . If you want to install or remove componets always make sure that the power is disconnected.

Some common feautures of a desktop are: keyboard, mouse, monitor, cpu, ram, usb ports, adapter cards , speakers are an additional opition. The desktops computers have a standard motherboard because they have more room in the cpu because they are a bigger device than the laptops. You would also have to buy the printer sepratly if you need one.

We also learned about troubleshooting and how you are able to get rid of the problems if it comes up on your conmputer. You do this by1.gathering infomation from the customer to see what is wrong with the computer.2. Try the quick and obvious solutions and see if that works. 3. Gather data from the computer see what is wrong so you are albe to fix the problem.4. Job done.

The first laptop that was invented was built in 1979 and this was around £2,000 and in our days that would be worth around 500,000 which is half a million pounds. An average smartphone these days would cost around from £50 to £100. A dell desktop these days would cost around £600 and that would be with a keyboard monitor mouse and everything you need, however a dell laptop would cost around £300 and you would not need a laptop or mouse/touchpad because it is built in and portable.

To your right this is the latest tablet that is out is was made by apple and it is called the Ipad this is the tablet that we focused on this term it is very good you are able to watch movies listen to music broswe the web for anything you want it also has a book store which allows you to buy books and read them and you are able to keep the books on your own little book shelf and this is one of the many applications you are also able to download the games you want for free like you are able to on any other apple product. Apple is probley the most advanced company of making touch screen products they have the IPOD touch the IPHONE and the IPAD. The only problem with the IPHONE would be the price the price for an 16GB IPHONE 3G it would be £500 pounds and for a 32GB IPHONE would be around £550 pounds and an 8GB IPOD would be around £152 but the IPAD which is soon to be realesed is £300 but for the applications and all the things you get like internet it also has up to ten hours life and if you put it on stand by it could last up to one month. this could turn out to be a bargin

In my opinioun if i had to choose from a laptop, desktop, smartphone, PDA's or a tablet I would choose a laptop because the internet is much quicker it is smaller cheaper and the best thing is that it is wireless this is good because you can take it anywhere you want uou can take it anywhere in your house and the internet or even the whole computer will still work and in my eyes that is brilliant. My second choice would have to be the PDA's if i had to recomend one it would have to be the IPOD touch i have one of these myself it is brilliant you are able to download the latest games for free you can also listening to music. The best thing on this thought has to be the internet this means if you havent got a song downloaded you can go on the interent and listen to it from you can can also socialise throught things like facebook msn or bebo. The bad things thought about the PDA's would be that there battary life is not excellent. The one I would not recomend would be the smartphone but only if it was an old one because if you got a newer smartphone it has the internet and everything you need. I hope you have enjoyed my chapter six summary.
