chapter 6 we been learning about the diffrence between laptops and desktops, in this summary i will explain the diffrences and the uses of laptops and desktops. also we are going to talk about smart phones and pda’s and how much they cost and the different prices also the best one I would pick.
the first ever laptop that was ever envented was in 1979 which cost about £2,000 which in our day would cost about half a millon pounds which is alot for a laptop. these days laptops cost about £600 for a well built one which comes with a lot of things and a desktop would cost about £450 that will include a monitor, mouse, keyboard all the basic things a desktop will need.
laptops-i know that the diffrence between laptops and desktops are that most laptops are wireless and you can carry it around also it is very light so you can just stick it in your bag. the good thing about laptops are that they are wireless so you can take it to school and play games and do what ever you want with it.
desktops-the diffrence between laptops and desktops is that the desktops are much bigger than laptops, also desktops are not wireless and the motherboards are much bigger. the good thing about desktops is that it has a big case which means it has a bigger fan which is good for a desktop and it provides more air in the case, laptops in the other hand has a smaller fan which means it has less air so it gets much hotter than a desktop which is bad. Some features of desktop are it has a mouse, monitor, keyboard. it includes a CPU, ram, USB, ports and also adapter cards. there are more info further on the page.
below is a picture of the laptops motherboard
below this picture is another picture but this time is the desktops motherboard.

as you can see the desktops motherboard is much bigger than the laptops motherboard which means it needs more space.
chapter 6 also talk about laptops components. there are alot of components on a laptop that need to be replaced. some of the components are hot swappeble which means they can be removed and replaced with they computer still on. here are some components that maybe needs to be replaced:
- battery
- optical drive
- hard drive
- memory
- pc drives
in chapter 6 it mensions how to clean a laptop keyboard and what to do before you do it.
here are the rules before cleaning the laptop keyboard.
- turn laptop off
- dissconnect all atached devices
- dissconnect laptop from eletrical outlet
- remove all installed battries
- wipe laptop and keyboard with a soft lint free cloth that is lightly moistened with water or computer screen cleaner.
some common laptop features:
- They are small and portable.
- They have an integrated display screen in the lid.
- They have an integrated keyboard in the base.
- They run on AC power or a rechargeable battery.
- They support hot-swappable drives and peripherals.
- Most laptops can use docking stations and port replicators to connect peripherals.
the good things about the laptop is that the CPUs don’t use as much power as desktop computers. which also means that it produces less heat. so it wont need a big fan for the laptop and a desktop will have to use a bigger fan.
I am now going to talk more about laptops and things inside such as Ports, connections, and drives are located on the front, back, and sides of the laptop due to the design. Laptop batteries are manufactured in various shapes and sizes. They use different types of chemicals and metals to store power. One of the most popular features of a laptop is the ability to operate using batteries. This feature allows laptops to operate in locations where AC power is not available. There are a number of components on a laptop that may need to be replaced. And make sure that you replace it with the right things. Some components are hot-swappable, which means that they can be removed and replaced while the computer is on. These are some components that may need to be replaced:
- Battery
- Optical drive
- Hard drive
- Memory
- PC cards
There are about five input devices available when the laptop lid is open. those five are:
- Keyboard
- Input devices
- Fingerprint reader
- Volume controls
- Power button
in chapter 6 we also learned about trouble shooting and how to get rid of it from your laptop or desktop, first you have to find out what is wrong with it and then you have to call the technicians and let them tell you what to do and they will repair the errors, in order to repair the damage on the computer, also you have to gather all the information from the computer and then see if you can fix it. This process is called troubleshooting.
smart phones are mobile phones which you can only ring people by and also text people, PDA’s are like mobile phones but it just has more applications and has internet on it but the down side of this is that on a mobile you can ring people and text people but on PDA’s you can not do that it just music, games and internet but the good side of it is that it is a bit more organised with organizer tools and information tools such as:
- Address book
- Calculator
- Alarm clock
- Internet access
- Global positioning
An example of a PDA is a ipod touch it has a lot of things but it don’t have texts or you can’t ring from it. the devices are known as portable hand held devices. Smartphone connectivity and PDA connectivity include Bluetooth and regular USB cable connections.

The bad things about PDA’s is that first of all the ringing and text in but someone spotted out another con about the ipod touch it is that the battery life runs out pretty quick so they are the downsides of the PDA’s.
Apple is probley the most best company of making touch screen products, another latest tablet has been latest released by apple called the Ipad, this is a very good device as you can listen to music watch cool movies, buy things online, download games and it is all for free, it has cool applications and a lot more things. as I have said before apple is the best company as they have made most touch screens such as, Ipod Touch, Iphone and now the Ipad. The bad thing about the the Iphone is that it is very expensive because the 32gb Itouch costs around £550 and that is alot of money.
In conclusion if i had to pick out of the laptop, desktop, pda or smart phone i would pick the laptop because it has wireless internet, you can sometimes get a camera on a laptop also there are cool games on there it is quiet fast, faster than a normal laptop and you can download movies but the best thing is that you can carry it around anywhere. if I had another choice my second pick would be a PDA because as i said before you can do a lot things with it like play cool games, go on the web and also watch movies and listen to music. So I hope you have enjoyed my chapter six summary.
