Operating systems are rapidly changing the way we use a computer every day, with new Os’s being produced and published nearly every year, we will eventually have a huge variety of operating systems to choose from to suite our needs. The main competitors in this market at the moment are Microsoft and Apple. These two companies are the two main companies that produce operating systems but there is an open source OS called Linux which is slowly becoming more popular. All of these brands produce completely different operating systems with both there advantages and disadvantages.

Some of these include:

MICROSOFT WINDOWS

1. This os is good for documents like word and publishing .
2. And they have wide compatability with a lot of programs and games.
3. But the main problem they face is that if you don’t have anti-virus software then getting a virus is likely.

APPLE MAC OS

1. This operating system is very good for video/movie editing
2. It is also the safest operating system you can buy
3. You can’t change the appearance
4. More expensive
5. There are not many programs out at the moment specifically for mac

UNIX AND LINUX

1. This os is completely free for anyone to download off of the internet
2. every setting and appearance can be changed to your choice
3. But it is not the most reliable os

Operating system capabilities have reached an all time high. An operating system is the interface between the user and the computer. It provides a bridge between the hardware and applications so you can access them with ease. They create a file system that can store hundreds of files all on one computer and they can be accessed with no problems. You can manage the applications you want/need or you can purchase them. The control panel on each operating system can easily access the settings and they can be easily changed to your preference.

Some examples of different operating systems include:

• Windows 2003 server
• Mac os x
• Linux
• Windows XP
• Windows Vista
• Mac osx Leopard and Tiger
• Windows 7

And the newest os that will be produced is followed on by the new internet provider Google Chrome. The new OS is called Chrome OS which provide quick startup but the newest concept is that all of your files will be saved via the internet to maximize computer performance.
