Introductions To The Personal Computer…
A computer is a system that consists of hardware and software components. hardware is physical equipment such a the case, storage drives, keyboards, monitors, cables, speakers and printers.
Software is a term used to describe operating systems and programs. The operating system tells the computer how to work. These instructions may include accessing, identifying and processing information.
Programs and applications perform different functions. Programs vary alot depending on the type of information that will be accessed or generated; for example instructions for balancing a checkbook are different from instructions for stimulating a virtual reality on the internet.
Names, purposes and characteristics of cases and power supplies.
computer cases provide protection and support for the internal components of the computer. Every computer needs a source of power, and they get it through the power supply which converts alternating current (AC) power from the wall socket into direct current (DC) power. Sizes and shapes of computers vary, but is usually determined by the size of the mother board and other internal components.
If in the future you may want to add additional internal components you will need to have a larger computer case, which will help fit them in. Other users may select a smaller case that requires minimal space. Computer cases should be durable, easy to service, and have additional room for expansion.
The power supply must provide enough power for the components that are presently installed onto the computer and allow for additional components that may be added on in the future. If you choose a power supply that can only manage to power present components, it may also be necessary to replace the power supply if you do ‘upgrade’ by adding additional components, so the power supply can deliver enough electricity to power all of the components.
Describing Cases.
A computer case contains framework to support internal components, while providing a enclosure for added protection. Computer cases are usually made of metals like steel, and plastics, and are able to be made into many different s styles.
Sizes and layouts of cases are known as form factors. There are many different types of cases but basic form factors for computer cases include desktop and tower. Desktop computer cases may be slim-line, or full sized, where as tower cases may be slim-lined or fullsized.
Computer cases have many names; such as; computer chassis, housing, box, tower, and cabinet.
As well as adding additional protection and support cases also provide an environment designed to keep the internal components cool, so they do not over heat and get damaged. Case fans are used to move cold air around the case. As the air passes warm components, it absorbs heat and then exits the case.
Some of the many factors of choosing a a computer case include; size of motherboard, the number of external or internal drive locations named bays, and available spaces.
Cases also help prevent damage from static electricity. Internal components of the computer are grounded by attachment to the case.
Note: Always choose a case that matches the physical dimensions of the power supply and motherboard.
