Different of versions of Windows OS are Windows 2000, Windows XP home, proffesional and media  center editions and Windows vista home basic, business and premium editions When installing an OS into a customer computer its best to discuss the features the customer wants in there computer and then install the system that is most attuned to those needs.

The operating system inside a computer is the user interface from user to the computer it provides a bridge between the hardware and applications it also creates a file system to store data it also manages all applications used on the computer and is also used to interperet user commands an operating system will have minimal requirements for hardware

Netowrk operating systems

A network operating system (NOS) in an operating system that contains additional features to increase functionality and manageability in a networked environment some examples of these netowrk operating systems are windows 2000 server, windows 2003 server, UNIX, linux, Noevell netware and MAC OS X

The NOS is used to provide network resources to clients who use the system some of these are server applications such as shared databases, centralized storage for data, Directory services that provide a centralized repository of user accounts and resources on the network, such as LDAP and Active Directory, Network print que, Network access and security and redundant storage systems, such as RAID and backups.

here are some examples of network OS protocols designed to perform network functions

HTTP: Defines how files are exchanged on the web

FTP: Provides services for file transfer and manipulation

POP: Retrieves email meeages from an email server

DNS: Resolves URLs for websites to their IP addresses

DHCP: Automates assignement of IP addresses

to install windows xp proffesional firstly insert the installation cd and then an installation wizard will apear and ask you to follow a series of onscreen questions and provide answers after these have been answered the installation completes automatically

default OS installation requires minimal or no user interaction during the installation wizard, A custom installation allows the user to customize the settings of the operating system including the regional and network settings a user can also customize a windows xp proffesional installation to include features such as productivity options such as microsoft office, own custom applications made by the user, operating system support for multiple languages, OS deployment feature packusing the microsoft systems management supervisor (SMS) and also hardware device drivers such as a printer or wireless card driver

some windows installation custom methods are unattended installation which is done from a network distribution point using an answer file, image based installation using sysprep and a disk imaging program which copies an image of the operating system directly to the hardrive with no user intervention, remote installation using remote installation services (RIS ) Which can download the operating system across the network, OS deployment feature pack using microsoft systems management servers (sms) which can dramatically simplify deployment of an operating system accross the organization
